Biographical / Historical

Michael Audun Gallis was born on July 23, 1943 in San Francisco, California to Michael Alexander Gallis (1909-2001) and Britta Christina Anderson Gallis (1903-1999). He received his Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley and one Master's Degree in Architecture and another in City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, Gallis taught for 1 year at the University of Miami. While he was in Miami, Gallis formed the MLK Blvd. Development Corporation with Bernard Dyer to help rebuild the inner city.

Gallis became an associate professor of Architecture and Planning at UNCC in 1974, a position he would hold until 1990. While teaching at UNCC, Gallis started Noah Studios in 1980. As a licensed architect, he had students work with him and they created the Rock Hill Gateway Plan for Mt. Holly. In 1988, Noah Studios broke up and Gallis established Michael Gallis and Associates, a strategic planning and design firm. This organization has become a national leader in city planning and developing regional models for integration and development. They also specialize in transportation, airport and economic development and have created strategic development and transportation programs for a large number of cities across the country, including Charlotte, Detroit, San Diego and Orlando. Michael Gallis and Associates has received numerous awards, including a National Design Award from the Department of Transportation and the National Endowment of the Arts, as well as two National Economic Development Awards.
