Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised exclusively of items documenting Myrick's service as mayor of Charlotte from 1987 to 1991. The papers highlight the mayor's drug prevention efforts, traffic congestion, the new convention center, Charlotte's bid for a National Football League team, and the related football stadium controversy. The collection contains no records documenting Myrick's earlier city council tenure, her 1992 U.S. Senate campaign or her professional career as an advertising executive.

Biographical / Historical

Suellen Wilkins Myrick was born in Tiffin, Ohio, on August 1, 1941. She attended Heidelberg College for a year, 1959-60. Myrick began her political career as a Republican at-large member of the Charlotte City Council, 1983-85. In 1987, she ran for mayor of Charlotte and defeated to the two-term incumbent, Harvey Gantt. Myrick was re-elected to a second term in 1989. She did not seek a third term in 1991. Myrick campaigned unsuccessfully for a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1992, losing to eventual winner Lauch Faircloth in the Republican primary. In 1994, as the Republican nominee, she ran and won the vacant seat for the U.S. House of Representatives, North Carolina 9th district, which includes much of Mecklenburg County. Myrick is president and chief executive officer of Myrick Advertising, Marketing, and Public Relations. A resident of Charlotte since 1970, she and her husband, Ed, have five children.
