Biographical Note

Daniel G. Clodfelter was born in Thomasville, North Carolina, graduated from Thomasville Senior High School, and earned a bachelor's degree from Davidson College. He was named a Rhodes Scholar in 1972 and earned an additional bachelor's degree from Oxford University. He served as a law clerk for Judge James B. McMillan of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of N.C. from 1977-1978. Clodfelter then entered private practice in Charlotte.

Clodfelter served as a member of the Charlotte City Council, representing District One (East Charlotte) from 1987 to 1993. He was elected to the North Carolina Senate in 1998 and served from 1999-April 8, 2014 when he resigned after being appointed Mayor of Charlotte. Clodfelter was appointed mayor by the Charlotte City Council after the resignation and arrest of Mayor Patrick Cannon. Clodfelter ran for a full term in 2015 but was defeated in the primary by Jennifer Roberts.

Overview

Daniel G. Clodfelter was the 57th mayor of Charlotte, NC serving from April 9, 2014 – December 7, 2015. He was appointed by the Charlotte City Council after the resignation of Mayor Patrick Cannon. The small collection primarily consists of expense reports related to: US Conference of Mayors, Mayors Innovation, Metro Mayors Meeting, and Holly Eskridge.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Transferred by the Office of the Mayor, City of Charlotte, 2018.

UNC Charlotte J. Murrey Atkins Library has a contractual arrangement with the City of Charlotte and the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources that provides that the papers of the mayors are to be sent to the Special Collections for arrangement and description.
