Biographical / Historical
The Charlotte transit/pedestrian mall was approved by voters in a bond referendum on April 28, 1981. A major component of the Charlotte Central Area Plan (November, 1980), the goals of the mall were to "provide a more efficient transit system and to create a pleasant environment of pedestrians" (Greater Charlotte Chamber of Commerce News Release, 12/20/81). The mall consists of nine blocks of Tryon Street (Stonewall Street to 8th Street) and the 100 blocks of East and West Trade streets. Construction began in January, 1982, with dedication occuring on Thanksgiving Day, 1984.
