Biographical / Historical

The Seaboard Air Line Railway traces back to the Seaboard Inland Air Line, which was created shortly after the Civil War by an agreement between the Seaboard & Roanoke Railroad and the Raleigh & Gaston Railroad. In 1893, Seaboard Air Line Railway was formally created through the merger of the Carolina Central Railroad Company and several others in the southeast.

A terminal was first built in Charlotte in 1858 by the Wilmington, Charlotte & Rutherfordton Railroad Company. In 1873, the Carolina Central Railroad Company acquired the right of way and completed a continous track that ran through Charlotte from Wilmington to Rutherfordton in 1874.
