Scope and Contents
This collection consists primarily of demographic studies Selden conducted as a volunteer and as a paid consultant for such organizations as the Boy Scouts of America, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, and Health and Hospital Council. The collection contains only a small amount of material documenting his career as State Forecast and Rate Supervisor for Southern Bell and his service on the Charlotte City Council.

Biographical / Historical
George Kearsley Selden Jr. was born in 1917 in Atlanta and was graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He moved to Charlotte in the 1940s, where he served as a market forecaster and demographer for Southern Bell. In 1975, Selden opened his own market consulting business. Selden served as a member of the Charlotte City Council (1977-83) and unsuccessfully sought the Republican mayoral nomination in 1983. He served also as chair of the Mayor's Committee on Urban Renewal and Community Improvement, analyzed population data for the 2005 Plan, studied ways to preserve farmland, and worked with Planned Parenthood and the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. The Charlotte Engineers Club awarded him a distinguished service award in 1971. Selden died on December 29, 1985 in Charlotte.
