Cuthbertson family papers

 Collection
Identifier: MS0417

Scope and Contents

The Cuthbertson Family papers, 1859-1955, is a small collection that primarily concerns Thomas Lee and Alice L. Jones Cuthbertson, their children; and also William Jones. Much of this collection provides documentation about the administration of the estates of deceased people and provides considerable evidence showing how estates were managed after their owners died. Most of the rest of this collection concerns Alice (Jones) Cuthbertson and someone else who must have been a close relative—William Jones. Jones assisted Alice in administering the estate of her late husband, Thomas Lee Cuthbertson, in 1884. He also lent considerable assistance in providing for the housing and education of Alice’s children following her husband’s death. An item of interest in this collection is a letter written to Alice Cuthbertson by Eli M. Adams on October 26, 1863. Adams was a second lieutenant in Company F of the 35th North Carolina Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. According to Adams, morale among the Confederate Troops was still high at that time and the health of its troops was also good. Adams’ writing makes for interesting reading about the activities taking place in Civil War military camps. A transcription of this letter is included at the end of this inventory.

The latest materials in the collection were papers collected by Julia Elizabeth (Cuthbertson) Glass. Julia married Shelley Carl Glass in 1913. The materials in her file include items concerning her wedding; a deed, dated September 17, 1923 that conveyed land owned by the descendants of Mrs. Alice L. A. Cuthbertson to Julia Glass for one dollar; and a Certificate of Social Security Award, dated December 7, 1955 (and also her late husband’s Social Security card). Lastly, the collection includes a file of information on Cuthbertson family genealogy.

Biographical / Historical

Family Historical Note: According to information compiled by Miss Anna Blair, a one-time state historian of the North Carolina Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Cuthbertson family genealogy can be traced in North Carolina to the eighteenth century, to Captain John Cuthbertson. John lived in Charlotte at least as early as 1766 and was a well-known and prominent man in the Charlotte community. Captain Cuthbertson had a son named David, who married Jennett Monteith. David and Jennett had a son named Josiah Cuthbertson, who later became a doctor. Josiah married Polly Hasty and they had several children, including a son named Thomas Lee Cuthbertson. Thomas married Alice L. Jones and had ten children. According to records found in the Adjutant General of the War Department, Thomas served as a musician in Company I, 53rd North Carolina Infantry Regiment. Extensive records indicate that Thomas died in Union County, NC in early 1884.
