Biographical / Historical

Adeline Hutchison (1811-1875) was the second wife of Dr. David Thomas Caldwell (1799-1861), the son of the Rev. Samuel Craighead Caldwell and Abigail Bain Alexander. The Caldwell family of Mecklenburg County has been closely linked with the Davidson family, who owned the Rosedale Plantation in Charlotte. When Dr. Caldwell died, Adeline moved back to her family in York District (now Rock Hill) in South Carolina. Their daughter, Martha Adeline Caldwell (1851-1884), married Walter Joel Rawlinson, who was likely the son of Joel Woodward Rawlinson, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1860-61 and in 1865-66. The Stokes-Boulware family appear to be related to the Hutchison-Caldwell family, with ties to Winnsboro and Edisto, South Carolina. R.A. Springs, whose signature appears on documents in the Moore-Springs family portion of the collection, may be Richard Austin Springs (1807-1876). [For further information, see Katherine Springs, The Squires of Springfield, (Charlotte, N.C.: W. Loftin, 1965).]
