Scope and Contents
The records contain its organizational bylaws, newspaper clippings (concerning its activities and awards that the chapter had earned over the years), historical notes, and several scrapbooks. Though a wide variety of information can be gleaned from the loose records in the collection, the greatest amount of information concerning this chapter is found in its scrapbooks, which date from 1960 to 2001.
Another important source of chapter history and information is found in its annual yearbooks. An incomplete list of these yearbooks in found in series I of this collection. Other volumes have been glued into the scrapbooks.

Historical Note
In October of 1780 a detachment of the British army encamped at Charlotte evacuated the area to relocate in South Carolina. Along the way, the British soldiers encountered McDowell’s plantation and began seizing any goods of value. The commanding officer of this detachment was named Captain McDowell, and upon learning that the name of this property was the same as his own, he ordered his men to return the goods they had taken. Soon, they continued their march southward. Jane Parks McDowell was at the plantation at the time; and once she was confident that the British army had completely left the area, she saddled a horse and rode through the night (taking her infant child with her) to inform American forces of the direction of British troop movements. This information enabled the American forces to continue their harassment of the British in the Carolinas.
The Jane Parks McDowell Chapter of the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution was founded on February 1, 1960, under the leadership of the North Carolina State Regent, Mrs. William D. Holmes, Junior; Mrs. A. M. Cornwell (state Vice Regent) and Mrs. Max Holland, who became the first regent of this chapter. Their programs usually include guest speakers who discuss informative historical issues relevant to the interest of DAR members. This chapter also participates in patriotic ceremonies, activities, and anniversaries with other DAR chapters at the state and national levels.
