Scope and Contents
Primarily photocopies of articles published in the Mecklenburg Gazette, Mooresville Tribune, and Lake Norman Magazine about the history of North Mecklenburg and the Lake Norman area. Includes a nine-part article based on the Civil War letters of Joseph and Margaret Brawley Lipe of Iredell County. Also includes an essay, "Caldwell Family History," about descendants of the Lipe family.

Biographical / Historical
Northern Mecklenburg county contains the towns of Cornelius (founded in 1893, incorporated in 1905), Davidson (founded in 1837, incoroporated as Davidson College in 1879) and Huntersville (incorporated in 1873, originally called Craighead.) Lake Norman was created in 1963 when Duke Power Company built Cowans Ford Dam across the Catawba River to generate hydroelectric power. The creation of Lake Norman permanently changed north Mecklenburg county by creating recreational opportunities and turning the area into a popular suburban residence for many commuters to Charlotte.
