Biographical / Historical
Cornelia Wearn Henderson (1902-90) maintained close ties to her native home in Mecklenburg County. Her father's family arrived in Mecklenburg in the 1820s, and her mother's family (Wearn) traced its roots back to the 1750s. Henderson's interest in local history began when she received a B.A. in history from Queens College. She continued her education with an M.A. in History at UNC at Chapel Hill, basing her thesis on domestic life in the early Carolinas. Henderson worked for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system for 26 years as both teacher and principal. In 1968, she wrote Early Charlotte and Mecklenburg County for Children, which stemmed from her concern on the lack of local history material available for third graders. Henderson also worked as a curator at Charlotte Nature Museum. As a very active member of the Mecklenburg Historical Association, she contributed much of her knowledge of Mecklenburg history by directing tours of historical landmarks and giving lectures. Her love of children and history never ceased as she often visited schools to lecture or have groups come to the museum to make soap or bread. Henderson even said once, "Some of them think I was there when the settlers came."
