Biographical / Historical
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Planning Commission is the agency that advises the Charlotte City Council and the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners on growth and development in the area.
The Commission is responsible for making "studies of resources, possibilities, and needs of the City, particularly with respect to conditions which may be injurious to the public welfare and for making plans for the development of Mecklenburg County, including the City of Charlotte but excluding all other incorporated towns in the County. Considers the desirability, from time to time, of the extension of the limits of Charlotte, and recommends when found desirable a program of extension to City Council. Subdivision developments are subject to the jurisdiction of the Commission; and the Commission receives and hears all petitions for zoning changes" (Boards, Committees, Commissions: City of Charlotte, North Carolina, page 6).
The fourteen-member body is appointed evenly between the City and the County two by the Mayor; five by the City Council; and seven by the County Commission. A staff of thirty four technical planners and support personnel is headed by a Planning Director.
During this time, Mead was also a professor of Political Science at UNC Charlotte.
