Scope and Contents

The NCCPA donated its first set of records to the UNC Charlotte Special Collections in 1993 and made a number of additions since then. Randy Penninger did the initial processing and James Kusik did more work on the collection at a later time. After Kusik’s work more materials came in (about two record center boxes), but these records were never integrated into the collection until March of 2008. Integrating this accession into the collection necessitated the complete re-processing of the collection. During reprocessing the collection was divided into series (according to the organization); which in turn were subdivided into subseries—a process that completely re-arranged the order of the collection. By the end of the March 2008 reprocessing, the collection was restored to the order that reflected the structure of the organization. Organizations like the NCCPA typically have documentation about its founding; such as annual reports, bylaws, a mission statement, and strategic goals. In addition to these administrative records, the NCCPA also has several different committees and the minutes that they developed. There are also newsletters, minutes of the governing board, and a large volume of material developed while planning their semi-annual conferences. Records such as these make up the bulk of the collection. Note that records concerning the executive board can be found in a subseries identified by that title and another one located in the committee subseries, entitled “Committees: Executive Committee.” The governing body was usually called the “Executive Committee” in the NCCPA’s early years, but later was more frequently called the “Executive Board.” The researcher should check both series of the collection to be thorough.

Biographical / Historical

The North Carolina College Personnel Association started in 1966 as a division of the North Carolina Personnel Guidance Association. The NCPGA would later change its name to the North Carolina Association for Counseling and Development. Over the years this division grew and defined its interests and in 1989 decided to begin the process of breaking away from its parent organization. The NCCPA formed the Transitions Committee that year and by 1993, the break was complete. The NCCPA maintained its connections with the American College Personnel Association (the ACPA). The NCCPA typically meets twice a year, in the spring and fall, to discuss issues important to the organization and its members. The NCCPA has always been a rather small organization, whose membership has been a couple of hundred members. The goals of the NCCPA have been to ‘increase diversity in membership and leadership, be a professionally current and active organization, be fiscally responsible and cognizant of its members’ financial resources, be committed to product, process and people, and to enrich the profession.’ Periodically, the NCCPA collaborates with other professional organizations in hosting special training seminars or conventions.
