Biographical / Historical
William H. Peeps was born on March 3, 1868 in London, England to James Abraham and Hannah Barnes Peeps. He immigrated with his family to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1872, where his father worked as a cabinetmaker, woodcarver and designer for the Phoenix Furniture Company. William apprenticed in furniture design and architecture and in 1888 moved to Chicago, where he worked for architect Frederick Perkins. By 1900 he had moved with his wife, Mary and father, James to Atlanta, where he was a woodwork designer.
In 1912, Peeps moved to Charlotte and established his architectural practice in the city, where he was one of the first men in the state to be licensed to practice architecture. He established a good relationship with the civic and business leaders of the town and built some of Charlotte's most well-known buildings in the early twentieth century. Peeps constructed Latta Arcade and Brevard Court in 1914 for Edward Dilworth Latta and built the J.B. Ivey Department Store in uptown Charlotte in 1924. In addition to these business structures, he also built several residential homes in the upscale Dilworth and Myers Park neighborhoods.
Peeps became a member of the American Institute of Architects in 1921 and served as president of the organization in 1924 and 1925. During his time as president, he attempted to encourage members to expand the organization and increase recognition of the architectural profession. He died in Charlotte on September 10, 1950 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery. Peeps was an important early figure in the development of the architectural profession in Charlotte and the state of North Carolina, several of his structures still survive today and serve as a reminder of his legacy in the city.
