Historical Note

The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was organized in Charlotte on February 22, 1912 with 27 charter members. The chapter's name commemorates the signing of the disputed Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in Charlotte on May 20, 1775. A major aim of the chapter is to honor and perpetuate the memory of the signers of the Declaration. Membership was initially contingent upon being a lineal descendent of a signer. Early on, the chapter worked to locate and mark the graves of the signers of the Declaration. By 1975, the graves of 22 of the 27 signers had been marked. Other projects have included the restoration of the Hezekiah Alexander House, a local historic landmark built in 1774 by a signer. [For additional information, see box 2:22, History.]
