Biographical / Historical
Samuel Jackson Stuart, of Huntersville, NC, was born on February 18, 1840. Soon after the outbreak of hostilities between the Union and Confederacy, he enlisted in Company C, 37th North Carolina Infantry Regiment on September 16, 1861, where he served as a private throughout the war. He was wounded at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, though his wounds were not serious. Stuart survived through the end of the war and died on May 26, 1921. Concerning the name of this individual and its spelling—he signed his letters “Stuart” though it appears as “Stewart” in Michael C. Hardy’s The Thirty-seventh North Carolina Troops and also on the cemetery register at Hopewell Presbyterian Church, in Hopewell, NC. The Roster of North Carolina Troops, Vol. III lists his name as “Stuart.” He wrote to his sister at least twice (but does not identify her by name)—on May 25, 1862 when he and his regiment were stationed near Hanover Court House in Virginia; and on April 20, 1863, while at Camp Gregg, also in Virginia.
