Biographical / Historical
The Charlotte Hornets minor league baseball franchise was founded in 1901 and was named for the city of Charlotte's reputation as "a veritable hornet's nest of rebellion" during the Revolutionary War, as quoted by British General Cornwallis. The team began play in the Class-C Virginia-North Carolina League as an affiliate of the Washington Senators (later the Minnesota Twins). In 1940, Calvin Griffith (son of Washington Senators owner Clark Griffith) built Clark Griffith Park in the Dilworth neighborhood of Charlotte to serve as the Hornets' home stadium. The team had several memorable seasons and both the 1931 and 1951 teams were recognized as two of the 100 greatest minor league teams of all time by the the National Baseball Association. Additionally, several players who went on to have Major League careers played for the Hornets, including Early Wynn, Harmon Killebrew and Graig Nettles. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham began his career with the Hornets in 1902 and his story of only appearing in one Major League game and having no at bats or fielding plays was featured in the movie, Field of Dreams. The Charlotte Hornets disbanded in 1972 after attendance numbers dropped and the team barely broke even. However, minor league baseball has continued in Charlotte over the years and the Knights currently play in BB&T Ballpark in uptown Charlotte.
