Scope and Contents

The collection concerns George Terry Lathrop and his career as a traffic and urban planner. There are documents in this collection that concern his work with Barton-Aschman and Associates, the Charlotte Department of Transportation, John Hamburg & Associates, the Southern Growth Policies Board, the Commission on the Future of the South, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Charlotte and Yale University. The collection is four linear feet in volume and dates from 1960 to 2002 (primarily from 1974 to 1998).

Biographical / Historical

George Terry Lathrop's career in traffic, city and land use planning began in the late 1950s when he earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from North Carolina State University (1957). Following a two-year stint in the Air Force, from 1958 to 1960, he resumed his formal education, earning a master's degree in city planning from Yale University in 1962. He also picked up a certificate from Yale's Bureau of Highway Traffic that year. Afterwards, he worked for a number of different employers--both public and private, including the New York State Departent of Public Works, Kimley-Horn and Associates in raleigh, John Hamburg & Associates, Barton-Aschman Associates, and the Department of Transportation at the City of Charlotte, NC. He also taught transporation studies and urban design at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1966 to 1973. In the mid-1970s Lathrop was very much involved with the Southern Growth Policies Board and its Commission on the Future of the South; and there is a considerable amount of material in this collection about these organizations. In 1976 he earned a Ph.D. from UNC Chapel Hill. His career also includes the authoring of a long list of articles and books, as well as the delivery of several oral presentations. He was also a member of several professional organizations dealilng with transportation matters. Was born to Virginia Terrell Lathrop and Albert Henry Lathrop on Aug. 17, 1935, Asheville, N.C., died March 7, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, N.C.
