Festival in the Park records
Scope and Contents
The Festival in the Park records contains an assortment of papers resulting from the administration of this annual event (correspondence, concessionaire, vendor and artist information, photographs and various forms of advertising and publicity). The earliest item in the collection is the cover of a telephone directory, dated 1972 that has a photograph of the Festival from 1971. An associated activity for several years has been the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk, and there are posters advertising this activity for the years 2000, 2001 and 2002. The annual Festival, held in early autumn, began an annual spring event, Kings Drive Art Walk, and there is also information included on this.

Biographical / Historical
A. Grant Whitney was the man who started the Festival in the Park annual event. This festival takes place over the course of a weekend in mid-September each year and features artists and their work, performers, crafts, food, recreational activities and a wide variety of entertainment. The Mission Statement is: "Bring the community together through the arts." The purpose: True to the vision of its founder, the late A. Grant Whitney, the Festival is intended to provide something for everyone. The Festival, with an emphasis on diversity across all ages, races, and creeds, promotes professional and amateur visual and performing artists. Through community outreach, the Festival hosts many youth and educational organizations. Over the years, administration of the Fair was gradually taken over by Julie Whitney Austin, Grant Whitney's daughter. While the Festival itself is an autumn event (September), the Festival Board decided there should be something in the spring, an especially beautiful time of year in the Piedmont of North Carolina. In 2011, the Festival Board creaated a spring fine arts event known as the Kings Drive Art Walk. It is held in April along the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, a reclaimed natural waterway between East Morehead Street and Pearle Park Way Bridge along Kings Drive in Charlotte, NC. With a focus on fine and emerging artists, the spring festival on the beautiful and easily accessible venue quickly became a popular annual fine arts outing.

The Collection contains an assortment of records, photographs and ephemera accumulated by A. Grant Whitney and his daughter, Julie Whitney Austin, in their administration of the Festival in the Park, an annual weekend event in Charlotte, NC since 1964. Also includes information on an off-shoot of the Festival held in the spring, called the Kings Drive Art Walk.
The collection is arranged into five series, one of which (Photographs) is further divided into subseries. There are also two files (Governor's Proclamation, 1991 and Adalbert Grant Whitney) that do not belong to any series. The five series are: Advertising and Publicity, Concession/vendor and artist/exhibitor records, 1993-2010, Ephemera, Photographs and Posters.
