Biographical / Historical

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission is responsible for the preservation of historic buildings and sites in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Established in 1973 as the Charlotte Mecklenburg Historic Properties Commission, the 12 member board is appointed by the Charlotte mayor (2 members), the Charlotte City Council (4 members), and the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners (6 members). Members serve three year terms and must have demonstrated special interest, experience, or education in history or architecture. The president of the Mecklenburg Historical Association serves as a non voting, ex officio member. The Commission submits its appraisals and recommendations to the Charlotte City Council, Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, or the town boards of Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, and Mint Hill. Proposals for historic designation are made in the form of a survey and research report, which includes a detailed history and architectural description of the property.
