Scope and Contents

This diary reflects the interests, activities and concerns of an older working class couple over a span of fourteen years. In the rough style and poor spelling characteristic of someone with little formal education, Evans expressed his opinions on the politics of the time. He comments on such events as John F. Kennedy's assassination; the trial of Jack Ruby; Lyndon B. Johnson's administration; the Vietnam War and related protests; the 1968 presidential election; student riots and unrest; the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.; the trial of Lieutenant William Calley; and race relations and integrations.

Biographical / Historical

Raymond Floyd Evans was born in or near Sentinel, Okla. Known as "Chub," he held a number of itinerant jobs, primarily as a construction laborer, a truck driver, and a small-machinery repairman. Evans and his wife, Florence, apparently had one son, Timothy A. Evans.
