Biographical / Historical

Members of the Sample family were early settlers of Mecklenburg county. The branch of the family that resided in the Hopewell area of northern Mecklenburg county traces back to William Sample (1736-1791) and Elizabeth Alexander Sample (1746-1822). They had a son named James Sample (1770-1853) who remained in the area and who is the ancestor of the Hopewell Sample family. His son, William Azmon Sample (1803-1877) purchased Latta Planation on the Catawba River in northern Mecklenburg county from David Harry in 1853. William served as an elder in the Hopewell Presbyterian Church for 46 years. He had four sons who all fought with the First North Carolina Regiment of the Confederacy during the Civil War. In his will, William left the part of Latta Plantation that included the "home tract" to his son Hugh Barry Sample (1843-1923). The plantation remained in the family until 1922, when Hugh sold it to the Catawba Manufacturing Company, which later merged with Duke Power in 1927.
