Biographical / Historical
The North Carolina Counseling Association (NCCA) is organized with an executive council as its governance body, which is made up of elected representatives of chapters, presidents and presidents elect of chartered divisions, representatives of non chartered divisions, and chairpersons of standing committees. Meetings are held quarterly to conduct current business and coordinate services and programs of the Association. A convention of the membership is held annually.
Chapters are organized throughout the state on a regional basis. Membership in the chapters may include persons working in any phase of guidance regardless of the setting to which they are assigned or the functions which they perform. Divisions represent specialized areas and are organized in accordance with NCCA and American Counseling Association (ACA) bylaws. An NCCA member usually belongs to one chapter, but may hold membership in as many divisions for which he/she is eligible and pays the dues.
The NCCA was founded in 1959 as the North Carolina Personnel and Guidance Association, then changed its name to the North Carolina Association for Counseling and Development before becoming the North Carolina Counseling Association in 1992. The North Carolina Vocational Guidance Association (NCVGA), whose documented history dates back to 1938, became the NCCA in 1959.
