Scope and Contents

A small collection of correspondence and clippings. One folder of correspondence comprises responses to an Op-Ed piece published by Barret in the Charlotte Observer, October 1994, titled "Gay lifestyle? What do you mean?" Correspondence also includes a typed note signed by Coretta Scott King accepting Barret's invitation to speak at the Lovett School where Barret was Dean of Students.

Biographical / Historical

Robert L. Barret (October 26th 1940-) taught at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in the Department of Counseling for 29 years, retiring in 2008. Since that time he has continued to pursue his career as a practicing psychologist in Charlotte. Barret's published works focus on parenting, issues of grief and loss, and clinical services to the sexual minority community. In addition to his professional writing, Barret has been active in promoting social justice, both in his home community, and in the American Counseling Association.

In 2007 Barret was featured on National Public Radio's "This I Believe," when he read a personal account titled "Living With Integrity." In the account Barret described his own struggles with accepting his gay identity and his ultimate choice to live with integrity and embrace his true self.

The Dr. Bob Barret Lecture Series and Multicultural Issues in Counseling Conference is held annually in his honor at UNC Charlotte.
