The George Morgan Goforth Collection is the physical property of J. Murrey Atkins Library Special Collections. Some material may be copyrighted or restricted. George Morgan Goforth (1922-2008) was born in Indian Trail, N.C., about 15 miles outside of Charlotte. He was the son of George Wilson and Minnie Belle Brewington Goforth. Goforth joined the Army Air Force in 1942 and trained to be an air crew member. He was stationed at bases in California, New Mexico, Mississippi, and Michigan. Goforth was reassigned from air crew training after VE-Day in May 1945. He was honorably discharged in December 1945. His final rank was Corporal. In 1951, he married Mary Rachel Smith (1921-2006). They had two sons, George M. “Buddy” Jr. and Alexander Frank.

This collection contains memorabilia from Goforth's service in the Army during World War II such as post cards, military patches, passes and excuses, name plates for badges and military cards. There is also a folder of military papers that includes Goforth's certificate of graduation from the American School of Aircraft Instruments, his discharge papers, his United States Army Air Force Meritorious Service Award, his pre-flight training report card and his physical fitness test. Finally, there is a box of photographs that consists mostly of pictures of Goforth's friends and family members taken during the War, as well as some photographs of Goforth and his fellow soldiers.
