Biographical / Historical
The Building Inspection Department for the City of Charlotte oversaw code enforcement and building inspections for structures throughout the city. In addition, they handled issues with substandard housing and operated the Minimum Housing and Community Improvement Programs. These programs operated at the same time as Urban Renewal and focused on demolishing unfit dwellings and clearing vacant lots of weeds and debris. A main goal of the Community Improvement Program was to improve the livability of dwellings and to keep areas from slipping into a slum category by having inspectors require units to be repaired and rehabilitated. William H. Jamison was the Superintendent of the Building Inspection department for the majority of the time these programs were operating in the 1960s and 1970s.
