Scope and Contents

The Wohlford Papers includes correspondence relating to his surveying business and plats drawn for property assessments, development of land, most in Charlotte, Mecklenburg and outlying counties. There is also correspondence and records relating to surveying work and assessments as a staff evaluator for the Federal Housing Administration during the 1940s. Of special interest, there are news articles and correspondence relating to EAW as resident engineer for the Blue Ridge Power Co.’s power project for Hendersonville, NC, 1917-18, and papers relating to the surveying and development of Little Switzerland, NC; correspondence with Heriot Clarkson, owner and developer in the 1930s.

Biographical / Historical

Edgar Adolf Wohlford, Sr. was a civil engineer/surveyor. He was born on February 12, 1887 in Cabarrus county, NC, the son of William Trigg and Wilhelmina Thies Wohlford. His first wife, Florrie Beard, died very young. They had one son, Edgar Adolf “Dolf” Wohlford, Jr.. Later, Mr. Wohlford, Sr. married Caroline Lambeth. They had a daughter, Carol Lambeth Wohlford. Mr. Wohlford went to Salem School for Boys and then got a civil engineering degree from North Carolina State College. He worked as resident engineer for Blue Ridge Power and Light Co. and then as civil engineer on his own from about 1923 to 1933. From 1923-1929, he worked in general real estate engineering, subdivisions, construction, performed co-appraisals of realty properties for promotion and sales. The next six years were spent in private engineering relating to real estate, physical, etc. From 1938-1943, he was staff appraiser for the FHA, appraising residential properties, subdivisions, correlation of data and making compliance inspections. For about a year, he also provided private professional engineering services, covering appraisals of realty, subdivision layout and construction. Then in 1944, until 1957, he served as staff appraiser for the FHA, appraising residential properties, performing compliance inspections, and providing correlation data. He trained appraisers and was a Valuation Station Supervisor. He retired from the FHA in 1957 with a U.S. Civil Service Commission annuity. He worked self-employed for a time making private appraisals of property for loan purposes and estate valuations. He has consulted with probable purchasers of properties and professional engineers relating to development. Mr. Wohlford was a charter member of the Charlotte Engineers Club, an honorary member of the Charlotte Board of Realtors, and active member of the Moravian Little Church on the Lane. Mr. Wohlford died in Charlotte on September 26, 1972.

This collection consists of correspondence, plats, and records relating to Wohlford’s surveying business. There are news articles and papers relating to the FHA during the 1940’s and also to the development of Little Switzerland, NC.
