Biographical / Historical

This collection consists of material acquired by Maud Scott (Mrs. John Thomas) Paschal (1881-1973). She was the daughter of John D. and Willie H. Scott. Mrs. Paschal moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1917. She was a long-time Sunday school teacher at Trinity Methodist Church and Dilworth Methodist, after Trinity split to become First Methodist Church and Dilworth Methodist Church. This collection contains an assortment of Christian songbooks and hymnals, a few church and Sunday school directories, and a few loose papers (two newspaper clippings, a letter and a Sunday school membership list). All of this material indicates that Mrs. Paschal was a very devoted Christian woman. She loved music (particularly Gospel music) and she faithfully attended church, Sunday school, church retreats, revivals, and various other Christian gatherings. From the material in this collection, it appears that she was musically inclined and almost certainly played keyboard instruments. Evidence found within the church membership directories suggests that Maud Paschal was widowed early in her adult life, but not before the birth of two children—Lucy Rebecca and John Scott Pascal. Lucy died in 2005 at the age of 91.

Overview

Collection contains Gospel song books, dating from 1886 to 1969.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged into three series: the first containing song books and hymnals, the second containing church membership directories, and the last that contain a few loose papers. Everything contained within each series is arranged chronologically so as to illustrate the metamorphical changes that took place over time. In Series I, most, but not all of the books have publication dates. Those without dates had to be estimated, based mostly on the copyright dates of the hymns contained in them, and have their dates preceded with the Latin abbreviation “ca.” meaning around an estimated date. Series II contains copies of directories from the Dilworth Methodist-Episcopal Church. These are: one copy of the membership directory for 1928, two copies of a year book for the Kilgo Wesley Bible Class for the year 1946-47, and one undated church directory (probably around 1960). Series III contains four loose pages—two undated newspaper clippings concerning the construction of the new Dilworth Methodist Church, a letter from Charles P. Bowles (dated October 8, 1955) to Mrs. Maud Paschal concerning Bowles’ intention to leave the Dilworth Methodist Church, and a typed membership list (undated, but probably ca. 1950) of the Kilgo Wesley Bible Class.
