The collection consists of papers of the Powell, Poole, O’Rorke, and Claney families of Charlotte, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and New York City, concerning various aspects of their entertainment careers. Individuals featured in the papers include Conza Howell and her husband, Howard Moorehead Claney. The collection primarily consists of correspondence and photographs.

Biographical / Historical
Conza Howell Claney, a native Charlottean, lived in New York City where she was the stylist for the Decorative Fabrics Division of Burlington Mills of North Carolina. She attended Columbia University, the National Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Students League, and the Fontainebleau Fine Arts School in France. Her silhouettes of seamen are now at South Street Seaport Museum in Lower Manhattan, N.Y.
Howard Moorehead Claney, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., was a prominent announcer and commentator in radio and television. After retiring from the business, he built a home in Charlotte, North Carolina (at 900 Berkeley Avenue) with his wife Conza Claney.
Helon Poole, owned and operated the Poole School of Dance in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her daughter, Patricia, performed with the June Taylor Dancers and married actor Dick Van Patten.

Arrangement
The collection is arranged into four series, two of which (Conza Howell Claney and Postcards) are further divided into subseries. The four series are: Howell and related families (1898-1988), Conza Howell Claney (1924-1993), Photographs and Postcards.

Gift from the Museum of the New South, 1999 (via Jean Johnson).
