Scope and Contents Independence Park was established in 1904 at the urging of industrialist D.A. Tompkins. It was Charlotte's first public park and sits off of Hawthorne Lane in the Elizabeth neighhborhood. The design of Independence Park served as the first project for John Nolen (1869-1937), who went on to have a long career in city planning and designed Charlotte's Myers Park neighborhood.
