Biographical / Historical

The John Austin Tate--Lindsay Tate Culbertson Scholarship for Black Students were awarded to Black students on the basis of "need, ability, and prospective service to mankind, or any combination of these qualifications". The size and number of scholarships awarded in any given year was determined by the committee.

The Tate Scholarship committee was made up of nine individuals: one faculty member from each of the Philosphy, English, Chemistry, Sociology, History, and Physics Departments, and three students (including at least two Black students).

The scholarship was established in 1968 by Alice Tate, a prominent Charlottean and philanthropist.
