Department of History records
Scope and Contents
The Chairman’s Files series has been divided into three subseries. The first, General Files, consists of chronological files containing an assortment of minutes, correspondence, position papers, and other administrative records pertaining to the department. The Program Planning and Evaluation subseries includes steering committee minutes (1970-1973), self-studies (1964, 1987, 1989), and materials relating to mission statements, the museum studies program, and development of graduate and doctoral programs. The last subseries, Retreats and Events, consists of three files—two on retreats (1972, 1977) and one on the reenactment of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse (1978-1979).
The Annual Reports series contains annual reports filed chronologically from 1979 to 1993. Not included are the 1983-1984 and 1991-1992 reports.
The Public History Program (HIST 6310)—Charlotte Trolley Exhibit Project series is divided into two subseries—one for the research and final proposal files and one for 3-D models of the exhibit. The research files include items such as the exhibit proposal and materials created by the design, education, research, and narrative teams.

Edward (Ed) Perzel, whose office files make up a majority of this collection, first appears in the 1966-1967 university catalog as an instructor of history. By 1968-1969, he was promoted to Assistant Professor, by 1972-1973 to Associate Professor, and by 1977-1978 to Professor. By 1981-1982, he had become Chairperson of the Department of History, and by the 1987-1989 catalog printing, he had filled the position of Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. During both of these positions, he maintained his role as professor. By the 2001-2003 catalog, he is designated as Professor Emeritus in the Department of History.
