Administrative History
The Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte was originally offered in 1971 but was soon changed to a Bachelor in Creative Arts in 1973, which remained until 1993 when the art degree offered by UNC Charlotte became a Bachelor in Fine Arts. This degree was joined by a resurrected Bachelor of Arts in 1997.
The Department of Art and Art History has been known by a variety of names, beginning as the Department of Fine Arts, which included sister programs in Music, Performance and Theater. This was renamed as the Creative Arts Department in 1971, became known as the Visual Arts Department in 1984, and took the simple moniker of the Department of Art from 1992 to 2007, when it took on its present-day name of the Department of Art and Art History, adding a Bachelor in Art History at that time. The department began as part of the College of Arts and Sciences, then became part of the Division of Humanities from 1969 to 1972. From 1972 until 1980, the department was part of the College of Humanities, until that college merged with the College of Science and Mathematics and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences to become the College of Arts and Sciences. The College of Arts and Sciences was then divided in 2008, and the Department of Art and Art History was assigned to the new College of Arts + Architecture, where it is governed today.
