Scope and Contents

The Academic Affairs, Academic Planning and Curriculum Records include materials pertaining to course and curriculum development and academic planning at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, not only for each individual college or support unit but also for divisions and for the university as a whole. These materials include correspondence, working documents, presentations of and responses to drafts of various academic plans, course and curriculum proposals, and library consultations to determine the sufficiency of the library’s collections for a proposed new course. Also included are documents pertaining to long-range planning for the University of North Carolina System.

The collection is divided into the following three series: Academic Plans; Curriculum Proposals and Academic Program Development; and Library Consultations for Course and Curriculum Proposals.

The three Academic Plans that are covered in this collection are the 1996-2001 plan, the 1998-2003 plan, and the 2000-2005 plan. Later Academic Plans can be found online at the Academic Affairs website: https://provost.uncc.edu/about-academic-affairs/goals-plans

The course and curriculum proposal files date from 1970 to 1995. Course and curriculum proposals post-1995 can be found in the Academic Affairs Faculty Governance Records. Administrative Background

The functions of curriculum development and academic planning are overseen by Academic Affairs. Curriculum development is governed by policies and procedures from the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. At UNC Charlotte, curriculum proposals are directly managed by faculty curriculum committees within Faculty Governance, but receive final approval from Academic Affairs. According to the Faculty Governance website, “The Office of Academic Affairs is responsible for analyzing, facilitating, monitoring, and approving proposed changes and the implementation of those changes as approved by governing bodies. In addition, while the faculty curriculum committees are responsible for curriculum development and maintenance, many changes to curriculum have resource implications. The Office of Academic Affairs has oversight over the distribution of resources as well as a role in monitoring curriculum changes that impact overall enrollment and student outcomes at the institution as well as our relationships with partners (including transfer institutions).” https://facultygovernance.uncc.edu/course-and-curriculum/deadlines-faqs

Processing Information

This collection was received as seven accessions, which were initially processed into several distinct collections. In 2019, these collections were merged into a single collection by Olivia Eanes, archives assistant. Folder numbers from initial processing were maintained, thus the numbering starts over at 1 at the beginning of each initially distinct collection. Physically, the files were maintained in the order in which they were received. For ease of discovery, they have been arranged into an inventory that does not always coincide with the physical order of the files.
