Administrative History

Prior to 1965, the director or president of the college served as chairman of the faculty. When Charlotte College became part of the University of North Carolina (1965), the chancellor of the university also served as chairman and presiding officer at the meetings of the faculty and the newly organized Faculty Executive Committee (FEC). In 1972, a new constitution was adopted, and a separate president of the faculty was elected by faculty members to represent them to the administration. Previously, the secretary of the faculty was often perceived as the spokesman for the group, rather than the chairman, since the secretary was an elected officer.

In 1978, further modifications were made to the faculty constitution with the creation of the Faculty Council, which took over most of the functions of the General Faculty. The council membership changes as new administrative positions are created, but it has included the chancellor, members of the FEC, several of the vice chancellors, deans of the colleges, the director of the library, and one faculty member from each department.

Since 2000 many of these records have been kept electronically on the Academic Affairs Faculty Governance website; very little is transferred to the University Archives. As of 2017, minutes dating from 2005 are available on the Faculty Council’s website (http://facultygovernance.uncc.edu/faculty-council/agendas-minutes). This site is preserved and made available via Archive-It, a partner of the Internet Archive. Please see Special Collections and University Archives staff for access.

Processing Information

Originally, this collection consisted of ten accessions that were either unprocessed or were processed in varying degrees, each as a separate collection. In January 2018, archives assistant Olivia Eanes merged these collections into this single collection titled Academic Affairs Faculty Governance Records.

Physically within each accession, the files were kept in the order in which they were in January 2018, when identified to be merged. In some cases, the files had been processed already and were possibly rearranged during that time. In cases where the files had not yet been inventoried, files were only rearranged intellectually (in the created inventory) at the time of the merge; physical order was maintained as received. In creating the finding aid inventory, some file titles were expanded from what is on the physical folder to aid researcher understanding. In other cases, files that, years prior to merging, were inventoried with different titles than those on the physical folders were changed back to their original titles during the merge process.

The files in Accession UA2013-001 (Boxes 59-61) were received filed by the following headings: Faculty Council Structures and Committee Report Summaries; Standing Committees; Miscellaneous Committees; FEC (Faculty Executive Committee) Meetings and Items; Faculty Council Meetings; Faculty Governance Structure; Issues; and Faculty Assembly. During the merge, the files were kept in the physical order in which they were received but, when inventoried, were added into the appropriate series in the merged collection.

There are no folders 5-8 in Box 21.

In January 2018, four files of copy request invoices and monthly account statements were destroyed per the retention schedule (GU80, GU61).
