Administrative History

The Charlotte Research Institute was formed in response to the 2000 North Carolina legislative action known as the Millenial Act, which provided the opportunity for all UNC system campuses to create a research campus. Early plans for the Charlotte Research Institute were called the "Millennial Campus Project" and were approved in late 2000. Initially called the Charlotte Institute for Technology Innovation (CITI) the institute had two central research focus areas: Optoelectronis and Precision Metrology (eBusiness Technology was added shortly thereafter). In 2003 the institute formally changed its name to the Charlotte Research Institute (CRI).
