History of the English Language Class Transcriptions

Overview Transcriptions of some of the 19th century letters and papers in Special Collections Manuscripts at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Atkins Library. Most transcriptions include photocopies of the applicable manuscripts with notations made by transcribers. These transcriptions were part of the course work for Dr. Boyd Davis' class on the History of the English Language.

Avery Hood papers

Overview Avery Hood was the first professionally trained and licensed social worker in Charlotte, and her career spanned from the 1960s through the 1970s. This collection focuses mainly on her and her career in social work.

Clarence O. Kuester, Sr., papers

 Collection
Identifier: MS0443
Overview Clarence O. Kuester, Sr. was active with the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and a tireless promoter of the city and its business potential. The collection also contains a significant assortment of papers concerning a theatrical production entitled “Shout Freedom” which was Kuester’s brain-child and was staged just after his death, in the spring of 1948.

James H. Lane papers

Overview The collection contains four items: a letter (and a handwritten copy), dated April 24, 1885; An Extract From General A. P. Hill’s Report of the Battle of Gettysburg; and a handwritten item entitled “Our Confederate Dead / Mecklenburg County, NC. / Roll of Honor,” collected by General James H. Lane.

America E. Hamilton Perry papers

Overview Mostly letters written by a native of Lebanon, Tennessee, while a student (1865-66) at Ogontz Seminary for Young Ladies in Philadelphia and prior to and during her marriage (1869-76) to Charles A. Perry, a businessman of Weston, Missouri. Also includes a biographical sketch of her husband and an obituary and resolution honoring her father, Col. James Hamilton.

William H. Platt papers

Overview Photocopies of letters written by William H. Platt of Port Jefferson, N.Y., to members of his family, while he was serving with the 5th and 146th New York regiments, in northern Virginia, 1862-1865; letters from Platt's brother, Jesse K. Platt, serving with the 127th New York Regiment in Virginia and South Carolina, 1862-1864.

Donald B. Rosenthal papers

Overview After relocating to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area, Don Rosenthal became active in two LGBT organizations; Mecklenburg LGBT Political Action Committee (MeckPAC) and Equality North Carolina (ENC). The bulk of the materials derive from Rosenthal's direct involvement with MeckPAC and Equality NC.
